The spiel...Pipe Track Park is built as new public space for the South Morang community. The unique park is realised through the collaborative efforts of the City of Whittlesea, Melbourne Water, Canopi Projects and the Wurundjeri Cultural Heritage Council Aboriginal Corporation.

The park tells the story of a heritage landscape that was once part of the Yan Yean water system. Built from 1853, the Yan Yean system is one of Victoria's most significant engineering projects and is the oldest surviving water supply system in Victoria.

The story of Pipe Track Park is layered. Built in 1875, Pipehead Reservoir lies buried beneath the park and is reinterpreted today using concrete plinths, steel edging and bluestone blocks. The bluestones are artefacts from the original system that show marks inscribed by stonemasons over 150 years ago. Interpretive signage tells the story of the Butcher family and their connection to Pipehead Reservoir and the deep history of the land is described by the Wurundjeri willam people of the Kulin Nation.

Water is central to the park's design. Curvilinear garden beds evoke the shape of pooling water. Concrete steppers trace the flow of water through the reservoir outline. For children, they are steppingstones through an imagined body of water, or they could be seats, a stage, an outdoor classroom. The steppers lead to a swale linking the reservoir to the playground, and the playground connects the site to McDonalds Road and the residential estates beyond.

Pipe Track Park is a place for playing, picnicking, quiet reflection, walking, cycling, and gathering. The design encourages visitors to connect with the new park and then invites them to discover the history, culture, and significance of the area.

Launched by Kellie Hunter Wurundjeri Elder, the Mayor of Whittlesea Cr Emilia Sterjova and Cr Mary Lalios.
