G R E E N J O Y was put into motion by Sanchia Maie Hovey in 2017.

She studied archaeology and criminology at Melbourne University. Her honours thesis was a whopper, it addressed the Indonesian forest fires and the challenge of building a culture of stewardship and engagement with the natural environment in low income countries. After a career working with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, Sanchia managed Cosmos, the iconic independent book and music store in St Kilda. Suffice to say, she loves people, nature, books and cardigans.

In 2014 Sanchia studied permaculture and urban farming and in 2016 completed a Diploma of Garden Design at Burnley Horticulture College, studying under Andrew Laidlaw, Landscape Architect at Royal Botanical Gardens, John Raynor, Director of Urban Horticulture at Burnley and Betsy-Sue Clarke of Dirtscape Dreaming. These teachers deepened her understanding of how landscape – both found and designed - plays a critical role in shaping healthy communities and making people happy. Since 2017 Sanchia has run workshops for the City of Wyndham and Hobsons Bay City Council, helping communities create environmentally-positive gardens. Recent projects include Pipe Track Park South Morang – a community park and play space built over an archaeological artefact and habitat display beds at Williamstown Botanic Gardens.

G R E E N J O Y acknowledges the Bunurong people of the Greater Kulin nation as the Traditional Owners of the land on which our studio stands. We pay our respects to their ancestors and elders – past and present – and value and learn from the reverence and affection they have for the plants, land and waters of this beautiful country.
